Fr. 69. 1878 $5 Legal Tender Note. PMG Choice Uncirculated 63. A series seen only sparingly when compared to the Series of 1907. The Series of 1878 was short-lived and replaced relatively soon after its introduction with the Series of 1880 and stands as the last series date to use the distinct pinkish-red Treasury overprint favored throughout much of the 1870s. A decent quantity of the Legal Tender Notes issued under this series ended up as part of period cash hoards and contributed to the survival of notes like this one which never circulated. Assigned a grade of Choice Uncirculated 63 by the likes of PMG, this piece offers an uncommon level of originality and eye appeal magnified by the distinct blue-tinted security paper furnished by the Wilcox Company which can best be observed when looking to the back design in a horizontal arrangement typical of later emissions printed around late 1879 and early 1880. The pinkish-red Treasury overprint takes the show and offers a symphony of color and contrast seldom encountered even for notes issued during the 1870s and subsequent iterations of this design which became less complex with the Series of 1880 and Series of 1907 which lingered through the late 1920s.
