Fr. 64. 1869 $5 Legal Tender Note. PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.

Part of a long-lived design lineage that would linger through the late 1920s, this note represents the earliest issue in that lineage on account of the series imprint that accompanies the centermost vignette engraved by Henry Gulger dubbed The Pioneer Family better known simply as the woodchopper. This vignette would be used on successive series dates, but its appearance on the Series of 1869 accompanies a distinctive array of colors that would be used only for that series. The green underpainting is particularly bold and offers a nice contrast against both the Treasury overprint and engraved elements of the design. The "Stains" mentioned by PMG are discreet and easily overlooked and confined solely to a small portion of the engraved design along the left margin close to portrait of Jackson and fail to distract in any meaningful way from the overall eye appeal inherent to this specimen. PMG comments "Stains."
